Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah, is an American musician and rapper. Queen Latifah is an American actress, rapper and performer. Queen Latifah was born in Newark, NJ. She is the daughter of Rita Owens Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Her parents divorced at the age of Latifah was 10 years old. Latifah went to Catholic School in Newark, NJ and was educated by her family's Baptist Church. The stage name Latifah which means delicate and compassionate in Arabic was handed by her cousin at the age of she was only eight. Latifah's 5'10" height allowed her to be a formidable performer at high school. She performed the song "Home" from The Wiz during a play in her high school. Latifah began her career as a beatboxer with the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah was a part of the original Flavor Unit group, made up of several MCs as well as the producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. He sent the recording to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the song and was signed by Latifah in 1988, to drop her first track Wrath of My Madness.
